Divide  //  Global Creative Director

Role

After the successful acquisition of the Lightbox product by Facebook in 2012, I decided not to follow the team out to Menlo Park. I was in the fortunate position to cherry pick my next project and was being touted around by the local VC firms. Qualcomm Ventures introduced me to a series A startup called Enterproid who they believed could be a fit and had huge potential. It was definitely not love at first sight, the product needed design help but I could see its potential and the team was incredible. The company had its sales team based in New York, its engineering based in Hong Kong and its design and marketing based in London. I was hired as their global creative director bringing together my experience as product, brand and marketing designer into a single role.

Challenge

Ever suffer from unsightly pocket bulge? Not that kind (filthy mind), the kind made by carrying two phones at once (one for personal use and one for business). What if we provide a solution to customers so they can use the phone of their choice, whilst securely separating their personal data from their work data? Providing the highest levels of security and data management for the business, without compromising user experience. With a set of bespoke business tools that enable the user to perform work tasks efficiently and professionally.

Solution

Divide provides a complete set of business apps with enterprise grade security and features on the phone of your choice. Divide secures separates your personal data from your business data which can be securely managed and configured by the IT organization via the Divide Enterprise Portal. Divide offers seamless access to corporate Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync or Lotus Notes-compatible infrastructure. Divide apps communicate with each other and any additional apps deployed by IT into the container UI.

Outcome

Acquired by Google in May 2014
Divide became the foundational technology for Android Enterprise. Many of the unique features were ported into Googles Gsuite apps, including inbox, gmail, calendar, and tasks.

A new identity - When I first started the company was called Enterproid (Enterprise on Android), but this was limiting, especially as the product was to become multi-platform (it also sounded rather unfortunate). We change it to Divide to match the app offering.

The app was entirely customizable by the IT administrator, the apps that shipped within the container could be colored or altered to match the company identity, along with the lockscreen and wallpaper background. The IT admin could use our app wrapping technology to add their own apps into the container, making Divide the most customizable solution in the sector - as noted by Gartner.

The app container held a number of Enterprise grade business applications custom built by Divide. We were early adopters of innovative feature sets such as inbox zero, inbox scheduler and free-busy lookup for team calendars.
